What is going on with Machinima? Why are they offering a $3 CPM to partners for talking about Microsoft’s Xbox One?
On the 18th January, 2014 an important document was leaked about Machinima’s partnership deal with Microsoft. Although the source mentioned on his blog that Machinima have worked with other companies before in similar deals, nothing was done until he leaked the campaign agreement on pastebin. Since then, media have been going crazy and over 20 different sites have published an article on this ‘scandal’.
UPDATE #1: Microsoft was not aware of individual contracts Machinima had with their content providers as part of this promotion and we didn’t provide feedback on any of the videos. We have asked Machinima to not post any additional Xbox One content as part of this media buy and we have asked them to add disclaimers to the videos that were part of this program indicating they were part of paid advertising.” – Microsoft spokesperson
There has been more campaigns like this, as leaked by the same source, but all of them mentioned that you had to include a statement in the description of your video which informed the viewer that you were getting compensated for advertising an event/product. However, after reading through the legal document, it seems that you are not allowed to mention the deal at all in the description or video. What was different about this one?
This campaign seems to be about getting people to buy the Xbox One, whereas others have merely been focused on advertising a specific event. Also, the bonus is $3 CPM instead of $1 and there is a statement in the legal contract which says all videos made are not to mention anything negative about either Machinima, Xbox One or any games made for it.
We have contacted both Machinima and Microsoft about this to ask why the deal was kept quiet, and why Machinima partners couldn’t state that they were involved in this marketing campaign. We will update you when we receive a response.
